(1887-1963)

   UK writer of popular fiction. His Ultimatum: A Romance of the Air (1924; vt The Ark of the Covenant: A Romance of the Air and of Science 1924 US) tells of world disarmament brought about by pacifists armed with dirigibles carrying a sleep gas and a ray that transmutes elements. They also possess atomic energy and other weapons invented by their dying South American "Master". After the US President is converted to their cause,peace ensues.
