KELLY, Robert
(1935-)
   Extremely prolific US poet; a professor of English. His novel The Scorpions (1967) has been read as sf because of its baroque rendering of a psychiatrist's conviction that a rich patient does in fact have contact with the Scorpions, a race of ultraviolet people. However, like Cities (1971 chap), the book is more plausibly viewed as a FABULATION,depicting US life after the fashion of Harry Mathews (1930-) and Thomas PYNCHON. In the 1980s RK began to publish short fiction in the same vein,collected in A Transparent Tree: Fictions (coll 1985).
